We are constantly under pressure, overworked, and rushed. When the pressure and demands become excessive or otherwise unmanageable it leads to stress.
The World Health Organization (WHO) declares “stress” as the “Health Epidemic of the 21st Century”.
As it goes with natural disasters, pandemics and terror, we prefer to ignore the signs.
No business or 24-hour career pusher wants to hear it, but we all need to slow down. Massively and collectively.
Ages ago, when I was working in an ad agency, I often felt motivated and energized by the frantic pace, changing stimulations, and constant interactions. Positive stress.
Then I hit the point where each project, meeting, and client encounter felt rushed, hectic and superficial with no time to breathe. Negative stress.
Stress is an ambivalent thing
Like everything else on this planet, stress too is an ambivalent thing. It can have its good sides and bad sides. In the short-term stress can be positive, it makes you perform well, and motivates and stimulates you. In the long run, it sucks everything out of you.
Let’s start with what stress actually means.

Stress sucks you up
Stress can damage an employee’s health and business performance. It is estimated that it cost American businesses up to $300 billion a year. (WHO).
There is often confusion between pressure or challenge and stress, and sometimes this is used to excuse bad management practice.
Permanent stress is a strong physical strain that can lead to serious health issues, on our mental and physical health. Yet, the world keeps going at light speed.
