People tend to make life difficult for themselves. They just can’t help it. It makes us happy to be unhappy.

People Want To Be Unhappy. Why Is That?

There are plenty of reasons why people (often unconsciously) pursue unhappiness.

“Imagine you have high expectations for yourself, others, or the world around you. Doesn’t that feel paralyzing? Some people prefer not to have happy expectations. Because they know that “happiness makes up in height what it lacks in length” — Robert Frost

Then there is the fear factor. The idea of happiness gives you a sense of fear of the unknown. That counts for those who never got to the point of feeling happy, but are very familiar with unhappy feelings.

Perfection versus imperfection is another reason. Perhaps you are focusing on imperfection so you can justify your habit of being unhappy?

How about waiting for something to happen in the outside world for you to be happy inside? This is a popular one because it is so much easier to blame the world for your incapability to not reach fulfillment.
